Value of Model Aeronautics - cover thumbnail

"The educational value of model aeronautics is another one of the hobby’s assets. This education is decidedly informal and usually accumulates as the result of much painful experience. Spiral dives and stalls are relatively easy to explain and account for in theory, but any model builder who has sadly raked together the remnants of a once perfectly good model can tell you with all his heart and soul the meaning of such terms."

About this title

Short academic paper describing the importance and advantages of constructing model airplanes. Prepared as part of Charles Dietz's initiation into Phi Mu, an engineering honor society at the University of Maryland. Interesting piece of aeromodelling social history.

Background (thanks to Pit for information)
Early in 1923, several seniors in the University’s College of Engineering met to organize a local honorary engineering fraternity; Phi Mu was officially formed on March 27 1923. One of Phi Mu's purposes was the inspiration of scholarship among students of the College of Engineering. Eligibility for membership was based on excellent scholarship and all candidates for Phi Mu were required to present an original thesis upon initiation. Because of the high scholastic requirements, membership to Phi Mu was limited and election to it was a great honor among engineering students. On November 21 1929, Phi Mu was formally inducted as the Maryland Beta chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the oldest engineering honor society in the United States and the second oldest collegiate honor society in America. The records of Phi Mu were donated to the University of Maryland Libraries by Maryland Beta of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Association in 1973.
